Auto, Auto, Auto
An experimental film looking at the Auto (auto-rickshaw) one of the most recognizable icons of modern India. In a densely populated country with lower rates of car ownership, the sputtering motorized three-wheeler found all across India, is the backbone of transit for millions. Autos feature a sheet-metal open frame body atop three wheels; a canvas top with drop-down sides; a small upfront cabin for the driver with a passenger space, lacking seat belts, at the rear. India, home to 15 out of the top 20 most polluted cities in the world, has moved slowly moved from two stroke to four stroke systems and more recently to natural gas and soon many autos will be electrified. Autos are environmentally friendly compared to full-sized cars leaving them with a future in India’s efforts to improve air quality and reduce pollution. An auto rickshaw ride echoes an old carnival ride, fun for some and terrifying for others. Among the sounds in this film, besides the ambient sounds of the streets and the voices of some drivers are a diversity of Indians talking about their love-hate relationship with the Auto.
